The company was started in 1984 when Glenn and Greg Chammandy acquired a knitting mill in Montreal. Gildan Textiles Inc. was founded to make fabric to supply the family of childrenswear business Harley Inc. From its unpretentious beginnings, (the company was named after two of its salesmen, Gilbert and Danny) Gildan blossomed under the North American Free Trade Agreement, selling 100% cotton t-shirts to wholesalers, who resold them to the U.S and Canadian screen printers. By 1994 Harley was closed in order to focus on the quickly growing business that had become Gildan Activewear.
Gildan's Environmental Approach
In the past 10 years, the company became the first wholesale activewear manufacturer to obtain the Oeko-Tex 100 Certification. Oeko-Tex is a set of uniform safety standards within the textile industry. Certification ensures that the processes and final products have been tested for harmful substances and found to contain amounts lower than Oeko-Tex set limits.
With approximately 30,000 employees worldwide, they own and operate manufacturing facilities in Central America and the Caribbean Basin and has begun the development of a manufacturing hub in Bangladesh to support its planned growth in Asia and Europe. The combination of vertical integration and advanced technology has allowed Gildan to lower its price per shirt to below that of Chinese manufacturers.
